Classification description — Information professional sub-group

Introduction

The descriptions contained herein are generally derived from selection standards established by the Public Service Commission for the recruitment and selection of personnel within the Public Service of Canada. It should be noted that these specifications are general in nature and more precise details relating to the specific job requirement are to be supplied to the Contractor at the time of the call-up.

Information professionals (INF)

In order to simplify the number of classifications, librarians (further defined herein) if requested, will be considered in conjunction with writers, editors, proofreaders, information services: (media relations, community relations, audio-visual services or employee communications and further defined herein) as information professionals.

  1. INF junior (Level I)—The individual works under supervision
  2. INF intermediate (Level II)—The individual works independently
  3. INF senior (Level III)—Professional responsibility under the general direction of a senior manager

Information services personnel (IS)

Information services officers specialize in one or more of the following fields: writing, editing, media relations, community relations, audio-visual services or employee communications. Through these field they contribute to the conceiving, planning, managing and implementing of information programs or parts thereof, to inform people of government activities and encourage public response, to provide advice and counsel to management, and to assess and evaluate the potential and effectiveness of information programs.

Qualifications:
  • Candidates must have graduated from either a university or community college in courses related to the work assignment or demonstrated a capacity for work in the information field combined with the ability normally required to complete secondary school education
  • Appropriate work experience in a specialization related to the job requirements may also be required

Librarians (LS)

Librarians deal with the selection, acquisition, organization and subject analysis of published knowledge in libraries or documentation centres; the provision of reference and bibliographic services; the development and compilation of catalogues, bibliographies, indexes and other similar publications; the development and utilization of manual and automated systems for recording, storing, and retrieving information in library systems; and the provision of advice.

Qualifications:
  • Candidates must have a comprehensive knowledge of administrative practices and regulations affecting a library; they must know and understand the rules, methods, techniques and practices associated with cataloguing, classifying materials and source referencing. They may be required to search and analyse specialized and technical information that is provided to clients, and to use a variety of on-line automated systems for the retrieval of information. In the case of a specialized library, knowledge of the specialty areas may also be required
  • These qualifications are normally obtained through university graduation in library science or university graduation and post-graduate training equivalent to a degree in Library Science. Appropriate work experience in a library may also be required.

  1. LS-Level I—The individual works under supervision
  2. LS-Level II—The individual works independently
  3. LS-Level III—Professional responsibility under the general direction of a senior librarian/manager.

  • Plans, organizes, co-ordinates functions of a unit/project team/task force within a library/documentation centre, including work of professionals/technicians/support staff
  • Analyzes, recommends and assists in the implementation of current objectives, procedures, internal policies, priorities
  • Co-ordinates work of unit(s) within a library, other libraries, national and international institutions
